The city of Como is a haven of rest and relaxation for Italians and visitors alike. Nestled among the mountainous and lush terrain of the northern part of the country, the calm waters of Lake Como are central to the area's seductive draw. Moments of contemplation, intimacy and connection create a tapestry of memories for all who visit.

While doing this assignment, I enjoyed theses people's experiences vicariously through the lens of my camera. Rest and relaxation is something we just do...I don't think we study it in any analytical way which is what I had to do on this day. From the vantage of an outsider looking in, I think I learned to appreciate the quiet moments just a little bit more.

Assignment #7 – Culture at Rest

The ferry to Bellagio the beautiful Alps are in sight, some might have a bit of snow on the peaks.

Definitely not the Staten Island Ferry but yet people seem to have the same reactions, some are thrilled to be on it and viewing the surrounding beauty and others appear to care less.

It is hard to tell who are the tourists and who are locals on vacation just from an image but in person you can tell, no matter all were having a great time, including the photographer, me.

Assignment #6 -- In Studio Fashion Shoot

This was my favorite assignment, it was terrific to go into the studio and work for the day and to top it off it was fun to work with FIT Fashion Design Students who were studying abroad for the year.

Recently (Spring Semester)I had to take photographs for a knitwear designer's look book and I used my experience from that to highlight this designer's work. I easily feel these images can be used for creating the same.

I wanted an edgy feel for this shoot and that is why I went with lots of black light with falling off lo achieve this I used two lights flash with a grids placing one behind her and one in front

Hard to believe that she is not a model and just a fellow student, she was easy to work with and very nice, she gave me the look through her poses that I wanted. I think it shows through that she is friends with the designer she wanted to give her all to the designs.

I wanted to capture the detail in the fabric and in the fashion designs while still keeping the edge to my images by using the lights to bring out the detail

It was very hard to choose which photos to select to put up and that is a good thing, I was excited about them all so I could not resist adding a few more to show off the designers work, the model and my own work too.

This ferry ride was an experience I will never forget and the view was one of a kind! The beaming sunlight hitting my unprotected body turned me into the dark knight of Como. The wind even brushed my hair as I relaxed on the top deck. These pictures I will surly treasure forever. Taking stunning photographs while going on crazy adventures and eating the best meals of my life will definitely go down in the history books.

This assignment was my absolute favorite! Engaging with the material in the studio, working with new and exciting faces, helping others, learning multi creative ideas, and taking charge/action with the models will all help me in becoming a better photographer. This studio was breathtaking. It was the first time I worked on a set that large. The models were so cooperative in taking direction as well as putting on layers of makeup and changing outfits every half hour. This assignment lead me to explore my creative mind in new and fashionable ways. It will help me to apply these ideas while shooting everyday, in and outside the studio!

After having a brief conversation with this man, I figured out he was a bouncer to a restaurant. He was shocked I asked to photograph him but he was happy to pose for me.
I was stunned to see this woman walk by in heels, so I had to stop her. She was so nice and even gave the thumbs up!
I approached yet another business man traveling to work. Therefore I caught him in motion as I crouched down against the wall.

This business man rushed by me while puffing on his cigaret. Not knowing, I was able to catch him in action.
This lady stared me in the lens as she walked by, most likely going to work.
This dressy woman waved goodbye to a friend, then started walking in my direction. I took several photo's of her, this one being my favorite.
Another business man casually walked by. I caught him on engaged on the phone.
These two gorgeous women strolled by after going on a shopping spree. I caught then conversing while heading in another direction.

i was creating a sort of living room setting. my model Tiffany, was wearing a knit purple dress that was kind of see through, so i also wanted to create a sort of sexiness to the shot. it was a fun day with everyone helping everyone else. it was chaotic, yet it flowed and everyone came out with good shots.

Another fun day. We met up with FIT fashion students studying for the year at The Politenico de Milano. We shot them wearing their designs in the school's huge, state of the art studio. Amazing they have such a space at their disposal, considering that the Politechnico doesn't even offer a major in photography.

I shot a sporty jacket that had a technical, futuristic feel. I discussed "Future Sexy" and "Future Seduction" with my model, Mari. She was into it. When she told me she practiced yoga, we talked about how we could throw some of that action into the shoot. It brought a whole new dimension of edginess into the shots that surprised everyone on set. It was a twelve hour day but the results made it worth every second.

In a country where soccer is played from a very young age on, walking and biking around town is commonplace and food is served in sensible portions, I was hard-pressed to see many overweight people. This is also a country where design is religion and we see this expressed in such marvelous accessories like watches, belts, shoes, handbags and pocket squares. It was hard to narrow down these photos. This assignment was fun and I could have done trend-spotting all day.

This adorable baby went on an adventure of his own. I found him wobbling along a sidewalk all alone but then I realized there was a mom's club near by in the park.

This man gave me the inspiration and courage I needed for the rest of the day because he was my first good picture at the Castello Storzesco. He was very casual and didn't mind having his photograph taken.

These kids were relaxing, smiling at us to our every move.

While walking throughout the park, new faces appeared in every direction. This shot happened within seconds.

This man was a vender at the a nearby stand in the park. He too was photogenic and was excited to talk.

This woman is a model that I met while walking in the park. With the help of Juan and I knowing Spanish and broken Italian we were able to hold a full conversation for over an hour. She even bought us gelato and cappuccino!
While exploring in the park I ran into a typical motorcycle guy. He was happy to get his photo taken, and he even spoke English.

This young man was one of a kind. He came up to me and threw a bracelet at my face. He even raved on about South Africa. In conclusion, I walked away with a free bracelet.
As I walked around the park, I found this lovely couple staring into the distance. They were very cooperative and photogenic.

These two young ladies were stunning. They hail from South Africa. While they were relaxing at a bus stop I just had to stop to take a photo.
While trying to speak to this young man in broken Italian, I later found out he spoke English. He was very kind. He even told me he had relatives in Texas. After having a nice conversation, I photographed him buying food at a local stand in front of the castle.

Before eating the best meal of my life in Milano, I came across this beautiful view in the the heart of town. With the crane in the background working on new buildings in the city, history of old buildings were also staring me right in the face.
My exploration in Siena was none like anybody else. I charged up the mountain side and scaled down roads. It was the county side, it was heaven! Out of breath after my long walk down the mountain I came across this alluring store.
Near the end of my tour in the museum I came across yet another stunning view. I rushed to get the best spot near the window, stumbling over people, but it was absolutely worth every second.
After relaxing at the bookstore from a toasty hot day, I ventured up spiral stairs which lead me toward this amazing view. The more I explore, scenery keeps getting better and better!

Assignment #5 Trend Spotting

My grandmother always says that no one wears clothing better then an Italian Man, she says they are the most handsome no matter what they wear -- at 79 she can say as she pleases; but after spending the afternoon photographing in Milan I would have to say there is a lot of truth to her words.

From the Shine on his shoes, to the aviator sunglasses on his face he looks as if he is center stage about to take a runway walk.

At first glance I thought a monogram on his pocket and then I saw no pocket just a monogram a special personalized touch on his white shirt.

It was a warm day in Milan yet he looks comfortable in his suit and tie, the suit fits well, the hair is in place and the shoes are shinned - my grandmother would be proud.

No matter where you are walking and who you are texting you cannot go wrong with a pair of black pumps, giving her a very polished looked.

While business casual seemed to be my subject/trend of choice today, there was just something about the way he wears this outfit that made me want to photograph him - not a tourist, maybe not local born, but the turned up collar said it all, he fits in so well.

Pocketbooks, yes I said it Pocketbooks, I can't resist them, and this snakeskin one required being photographed; it was just the right size for all of the essentials, a book, your phone, and a bit of makeup, oh and naturally the perfect purse must be inside.

The oxblood briefcase tossed across the shoulder just made him stand out even more, he walled as if he was very comfortable and definitely confident in what he was wearing and in himself.

Assignment #4 Milan Street Portraits --

I have always felt that as a Professor Ron likes to push me out of my comfort zone with his assignments so that I could get the best from myself, well this was a definite challenge for me, one that turned out to be more fun than I would have thought. I am happy to say that I did it, I stopped strangers in Milan, talked to them in Italian (well at least my Italian) and took their photographs. I was surprised at how many said yes and were so willing to do so.

Three friends out having fun together agreed to stop their attempts at climbing the tree behind them to pose for me.

This one was more of a challenge my Italian his Italian but the end result is one that I love. This is his photograph face, one he uses always, no smile very much like the men in my family, but if you look closely he smiles with his eyes.

Two friends out for a bike ride were fine with having their photo taken, the one in black was glad to be off of the bike and resting for a few moments.

The best way to explain this subject was an Italian gentlemen -- he was more than a willing subject, in fact he was happy to pose with his Vesper to have his photograph taken he said that it was a compliment to be asked and meant he looked "good" and he did.

Looks can really be deceiving I was positive that this woman was born and raised in Italy; I approached and spoke to her in my best Italian only to have her ask if I spoke English.

I was shocked and completely wrong as she was American.

Assignment #2 Old and New – Parade

My lucky day to be in Rome and to see a parade filled with beautiful costumes from years past. I was struck by the pride in which the costumes are worn to show their tradition, and it just seems to fit in perfectly with the surrounding sights, at first glance one could think is this then or now and then you see the street lights, the tour bus and the tourists.

If you look closely you will see drummer girls

I can't help but think that this adds an additional new for the time period of the clothing

The old dress is beautiful and the parade goers look as if they belong in years past but under their feet the lined crosswalks can be seen.

This was a very sweet lady from Australia on holiday with her husband. Although he declined to have his portrait taken, she was delighted. Such a bubbly and genuine personality.

This was a very kind gentleman who worked in the area. He was very accommodating, happy to help a student, and one from New York. He even took the initiative to decide where the light would best be. He wished me luck with my studies and my future.

I think that horse mounted police officers know they're a photo target for photographers. He seemed very accustomed to having his photo taken. He immediately struck a pose.

This was a young Italian man who seemed to be on holiday from elsewhere in the country. I found him very prideful and somewhat vain in the most non-arrogant way.

This lady was on holiday from Belgium with her husband. Another guy who declined to have his photo taken but urged his wife to have hers taken.

These two ladies were not very chatty but did take the time to carefully adjust their hair and posture for their portrait. I thought they were quite gentle.

A face seemingly chiseled from the same stone that surrounded him, it belied a voice of sensitivity that echoed in the passageway around. He sang in Italian but when I asked for his portrait, he sang the Beatles' Let It Be in English. He seemed grateful for the little bit of stardom that my camera offered.

Separated by millennia, the Virgin Mary and this modern day passer-by are connected by their maternity.

The juxtaposition of old and new begs the question, how would the classic architects have designed with today's technology at their disposal?

How would the classic architects have incorporated a modern day intercom system into their buildings? How would they have designed an intercom interface? I think their feedback would be fascinating.

With the differences of geometry and fabrication between modern day industrial design and Renaissance architecture, looking at Florence from afar becomes a physical metaphor for looking into the past.

Walking through the ally ways in Italy require one must rule, it's called never turning off your camera! Hence, having extra charged batteries come in handy. This shot happened within seconds. I saw them from down the street so I turned around, knelt down and snapped away.

Abstract

I honestly didn't think I would choose this concept to try and shoot as I could not think of any way to capture it. Inspiration struck when I emptied my glass at a local cafe. I probably had the most fun in post production with this image.

Circular compositions in general appeal to me. They are constantly fluid and without any corner or flat plane for the eye to rest, they are always engaging.

Motion

Moving the camera with subjects and long exposures was problematic as everything came out way too blurry - both subject and foreground. I decided to include reference points to "still" the eye at places within the frame in order to reinforce the message of motion. Capturing this photo was difficult without the use of a tripod and tethering. The unpredictable patterns of people passing by required more patience on my part than in any of the other photos I shot.

On the upside, the constant rain gave exciting chromatic opportunities with all the umbrellas that were moving around. Having them in motion projects a sense of ghostliness to me.

Documentary

I was lucky to find this couple lost in their own little world here on the back steps of this old church. This part of the assignment required a careful eye on people, something I usually don't do when photographing. With my graphic design background, I've more often than not been more interested in defining compositions that express aesthetic foundations like tension, organization or positive and negative by using inanimate objects. I enjoyed the challenge and wound up happy with the result.

I've noticed that here in Italy, people in general are very affectionate and expressive. This photo will act as a broader reminder to me of this.

Environmental Portrait

We visited a leather artist studio which provided the perfect opportunity to capture a subject inseparable from and defined by their environment. I tilted the camera in an attempt to give some drama to what would have otherwise been a "quiet" photo. I did this to show that the creative journey can be pretty cloying. Nevertheless, the results can also be ecstasy.

Geometry

Geometry has a home in architecture so to look for this theme in Florence, home to some of the most magnificent architecture, the process felt very unique. Around the Duomo are these steps in which I found rules of parallelism, equidistance and mathematical logic. The rhythm in the linear cues say music to me and the precision of their geometry is tempered by the centuries of wear. The passage of time turns what could be a harsh composition more organic and soft.

I found an emotionally practical aesthetic which distills the geometric elements into an overtly simplified composition offering a Zen-like feeling of calm.

Organic / Man Made

Green and yellow are color cousins and make for a happy story. Although the wall is man-made, it has an organic quality in the way it has been unpredictably patterned by the natural elements. The lemon trees in turn, which are organic, are grounded in the man-made pots. The dichotomy represents man's intertwined relationship with nature, echoed by the yellow of the lemons with the yellow of the wall.

Shadow

The on and off rain and clouds presented obvious challenges in trying to capture shadow. After giving up for the day, the weather became forgiving and I found this photo opportunity on the walk home. It was worth the wait.

Shadows are like looking at a funhouse mirror, all distorted views of the subject. More interestingly though, they appear to have a life of their own as they move with the light and vantage point of the eye. Shadows are extra elements that provide extra compositional opportunities and means of creative expression. They're always surprising. You never know what to expect.

Texture

This was the easy part of the assignment. I had been photographing examples of typography pretty much as soon as we got here. Florence is so old, the history is in every detail and I had been noticing all the wonderful layers of distress on almost all of the environmental graphics. The imperfections in the cement as well as the spattered paint on the metal plate give a clean and symmetrical layout a layer of visual interest.

This is only part of the class of 2011 getting their first glimpse of the visual landscape of Florence. They were immediately taken with the city. It was great to see them get excited about the days ahead.

Almost two years ago, I began to research the possibility of running the first study abroad course out of the photography department of FIT. I spent the last three weeks bringing that course to fruition. By all accounts it was an overwhelming success. There are many people to thank on both sides of the Atlantic. I would like to thank those at FIT for their unwavering support and guidance through the process. I would also like to thank all my new friends in Italy who created a network that was the key to our success.

I was accompanied by an extraordinary group of students who helped each other (and me) navigate a culture different from our own. The first of anything is always special. I am certain, in years to come, I will look back on this groups as setting the standard for future students.
